Regular Course of Study applicable to CBSE

The Board has defined regular course of study to be student attendance of a minimum 75% during respective study sessions. A session will commence from the 1st day of classes in Class X and XII to the 1st day of the ensuing month after completion of examination conducted by CBSE. Students who are requested to under take practical sessions will also have to comply with the same rule by fulfilling at least 75% attendance in all practical session carried out at laboratories. Those students who do not meet this specified requirement will not be able to face session end examination conducted by CBSE and Head of educational institutions are notified to omit such students form the list of candidates for examinations.

Students who have already undertaken Board Examination with Fail results and wish to re sit for examinations will also have to comply with minimum attendance requirement. Attendance will be marked from the date of publication of results of which student has already undertaken to the 1st day of the month preceding session end examination.

For migrating students admitting in to an affiliated school in the middle of sessions, their attendance marked in previous educational school or institution will be taken into account when calculating total minimum attendance requirement.

Exemption will only be granted if the Board is satisfied that reason for absence is on medical grounds and exemptions will be for subjects on W.E., P&HE and Art education only. Such students are requested to forward their application for exemptions with a medical certificate issued by a registered physician and through Head of School with his official seal and relevant recommendations.

Chairman of CBSE will be final decision maker in granting exemptions for absence in subjects of internal assessment provided that valid and reasonable excuses are given by the student.

Students who represent following valid reasons for shortage of attendance will be considered special exemptions by the Board. 

Students who do not meet with the specified minimum attendance mark of 75% will be able to submit their examination applications to the Board through the Head of School provided they meet following criteria.

If the student does not meet specified attendance mark at the point of three weeks prior to the examination, Head of School will inform CBSE accordingly but sill submit student application on provision. Such applications should be presented to the Chairman of Board by Head of School through their respective regional office of the CBSE. If the CBSE regional office considers the request to be on valid grounds they will forward same application for the consideration of the Chairman requesting permission for particular student to undertake examinations. Chairman CBSE will grant approval for students who have not fulfilled required attendance due to following reasons.

  • Shortages of about 15% will be condoned at the discretion of the CBSE Chairman
  • Attendance marks falling below 60% for examination in Class X or XII will only be condoned in exceptional circumstances resulting mostly on medical grounds. I.e. students with ailments such as cancer, TB or AIDS requiring long term hospitalization.
  • Students who suffer from inherent or prolonged sicknesses
  • Death of a family member merits special consideration
  • Students who take part in sports tournaments on authorization from school.

The Head of affiliated Schools will not be authorized to detain an eligible student from appearing in any CBSE conducted examination for any reason of his own.
