Eligibility criteria for admission
- Students who have previously represented their schools in an inter schools sports competition or games contest in sport or game.
- Students who have not previously represented their school but are determined to follow the course. Such students will be expected to take a physical fitness test and obtain a minimum of 40% total marks.
- All students who will be given permission to follow the course should be willing to undergo medical fitness tests and follow a prescribed program in physical education.
- Any unit undertaking physical education course will not cover more than 40 students at a given time.
- Instructors should follow physical instructional hours and course duration periods strictly on the prescribed norms of the CBSE.
CBSE Conditions to affiliated schools for conducting physical education in the elective subjects stream
CBSE will scrutinize all affiliated schools to have fulfilled a set of conditions prescribed in order to grant permission in including the physical education course in schools curriculums as an elective subject.
- Affiliated schools should have ample open ground areas to carry on physical education practical sessions and be able to avail at least a 200meter track with play field for conducting a minimum of three sports or games at a given time.
- Relevant master in charge appointed to conduct the physical education course should be qualified with a Masters Degree obtained in physical education.
- The affiliated school should have sufficient funds to conduct activities in physical education and be able to purchase any necessary equipment to facilitate sport and games activities in the school. Also should possess books and other publication of physical education for student reference. Such schools should be able to maintain existing sports facilities and centers as per CBSE guidelines and requirements.
CBSE Guidelines for evaluation of theory paper in physical education
Each question will be allocated a total of 10 marks. Students will be required to answer one question from an option of two given in each unit. Answers will be marked for each question comprising 10 marks with 3 marks each for content knowledge and understanding of content knowledge and another 4 marks for providing examples, descriptions and capability of underlying principals.
Career prospects for students undertaking CBSE physical education course
There is an abundance of career opportunities for students undertaking this course and who aspire to continue their careers in physical fitness streams. These include employment positions in physical education training, health related careers, physical administration opportunities and also performance based careers as in sports reporters, officials and professional players.
Students can continue higher studies in physical education in other higher education institutions and universities.
Students who have physical fitness and capabilities are considered to be better motivated and possess higher self assessment and confidence and therefore will be able to garner better career prospects compared to their contemporaries.
CBSE has initiated many community based educational fitness programs on individual and group basis as a part of disseminating knowledge and stressing importance of various concepts related to study of physical fitness.
